Go to your phone's Bluetooth settings and turn 'media audio' off for your car. This really improved the stability of the connection for me; it seems like there's some issue with the device trying to play audio over the Bluetooth connection while USB is also connected that causes Android Auto to freak out.

The HUD of your car obviously talks directy with the main headunit, and obviously if you use the car's navigation system it is able to replicate things of the main screen. Fun fact: the support to multi display has been introduced in latest Android Auto version (5.5) as I've demonstrated here so it's a very recent thing.
I have AA 1.13 installed in my 2016 Mazda 3. I used AIO tweaks to enable Wi-Fi and it has worked a couple of times but very inconsistently. I think that a large part of the problem is that while Wi-Fi is enabled, it is always unchecked when my car starts up. I navigate to Devices, pick Wi-Fi and enable it and AA sometimes works.

On my 2014 Mazda 3 S GT I used a open source software that let's you edit the infotainment. It's called something with Mazda AIO Tweaks. It adds Android Auto and works great connected by USB. Even though I don't use it much. But the tweaks app is great nonetheless. Let's you edit out the long intro and warning.
How do you get the latest Android Auto version? Because the latest Mazda AIO installer version is 2.7.9 and the version log says it has Android Auto 1.07 version in it. Is there a way to install latest version of Android Auto separately from the Mazda AIO installer?

Isn't android auto just a mirrored screen from your phone? I use the original system with android auto in my Mazda 3 from 2015. No performance issues whatsoever when using Android auto. Only the stock SD navigation system is a little bit slow.
